Mission Highlights - October 2009

Mary's Family

For many of us, Mary’s Family is an organization that appears at our church once or twice a year and does respite for families of disabled children.  In fact, Mary’s Family does much more.  Mary’s Family is also an operation that offers encouragement and advocacy for the disabled every day.

Mary's Family is a tax-exempt (501)(c)(3) organization founded in September 2002 by Martha J. Toomey, the mother of a ten-year-old who contracted a seizure disorder from a vaccination.  In addition to its respite programs, Martha and Martha’s Family volunteers offer camping and getaway trips for families; help families with travel costs when a child is hospitalized and attends meetings for families when necessary.  Additionally Martha serves on the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities and acts as an advocate in state wide activities representing the disabled and their families.

How can we help Mary’s Family continue to do this important work?  Your financial gifts to Mary’s Family go directly to families in need.  Martha also keeps a list of items that are needed on her website at Mary's Family Wish List. Check out the list. Perhaps there is something that you can donate.

On Saturday, October 10th Mary’s Family will be hosting respite at Greenwich.  This is your chance to spend part of your Saturday being a friend to a very special child.  Come volunteer!  In addition to working with children we need at least one person to make lunch for the volunteers.  This is your opportunity to become part of Mary’s Family.

For more information on the October 10th respite contact Charlie Coe (ccoe@greenwichpres.org or 703-393-9384).

For more information on Mary’s Family contact Martha Toomey (mjtoomey1995@yahoo.com or 540-364-4757).

Servant Saturday - October 17, 8am - 12:30pm

The Mission Committee invites you to join us on the 3rd Saturday of each month for a time of fellowship and the “Building of the Church.”  We will be working within our church family and the local community to provide some “hands on” assistance to members, friends, and mission partners of Greenwich Presbyterian Church.  Our goal is to enable members of Greenwich to use some time, skills and talents that can help fulfill the (IOU) “Inward, Outward and Upward” ministry of Greenwich.

Our next Servant Saturday will be October 17th from 8:00am to 12:30pm.    Our next project will include yard word and improvements in Manassas.  Transportation from Greenwich can be provided.  More work here at Greenwich is needed as well.  For more information, contact Mike Simms at 703.754.4673.

SERVE

I can’t believe fall is here already!  On October 12, 2009 at 5:30pm, SERVE will hold a Volunteer Orientation for those who would like to learn more about volunteering at SERVE.  The orientation will be held in the SERVE Administration building, 10056 Dean Drive in Manassas.  Prospective SERVE volunteers must attend this orientation.  You will learn about SERVE’s history and programs, what volunteer opportunities are available, ask any questions about SERVE and be given a tour of our facility.  To sign up or for more information, please call me at the contact information shown below.  This is an excellent way to learn about our 35-year old agency and how You can help make a positive difference in your community!

Don’t Forget!  Empty Bowls will be held on Friday, October 23 from 4pm to 8pm at Manassas Baptist Church, “The Rock” Annex, located at 8730 Sudley Road in Manassas.  You’ve never attended Empty Bowls?  It’s fun!  The potters of Manassas Clay will have made several hundred hand crafted bowls – attendees select a bowl, enjoy a dinner donated by local restaurants, then take the bowl home with them.  Some people get a jump on their Christmas shopping at Empty Bowls because the bowls make unique gifts.  Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children age 10 and below.  Music, fellowship and food – what better way to enjoy a Friday evening?  Volunteers will be needed to help set up the day of the event (to include during the daytime), help in the dining area and in the kitchen during the event and assist with post-event cleanup.  Kitchen volunteers must be at least 16 years old.  To sign up or for more information, please contact me.

Operation Turkey, SERVE’s annual program to provide a Thanksgiving meal for our less fortunate neighbors, will be here soon.  We will return to Manassas Adventist Preparatory School, located at 8225 Barrett Drive in Manassas.  Volunteers will be needed beginning November 14 to help sort, organize, assemble meal packages and hand out meals.  Prospective volunteers can contact me beginning October 12 to sign up.  More information about Operation Turkey will be posted on our website, www.serveinc.org.

As SERVE moves forward with its proposed merger with Northern Virginia Family Service, please remember we are happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.  Please call Carol Loftur-Thun, SERVE’s Interim President/CEO, at 703-367-6722 or Rob Sturm, Chair of SERVE’s Board of Directors, at 703-368-4970.  We stand ready to help the community learn how this merger will allow us to increase our programs, and allow our clients become more self-sufficient, and receive a “Hand Up”, not a “HandOut”.
